Nicole Mary Kidman nasceu em Honolulu, Hawaii mas cresceu em Sydney, Australia.
Desde pequena que Nicole teve aulas de intrepretacao no Australian Theater for Young People de Sydney. Tambem estudou historia da intrepretacao no Philip Street Theater de Australia.
Estreou na televisao nos anos 80, fazendo parte do elenco da serie australiana Five Mile Creek. Em 1983 aparece em Bush Christmas(1983), comedia realizada por Henri Safran e em BMX Bandits(1983), um filme de accao para jovens realizada por Brian Trenchard-Smith.
Depois de rodar outros titulos televisivos e cinematograficos, Nicole ganha reconhecimento interpretativo pela sua participacao em "Vietnam"(1987), miniserie pela qual e galardoada como melhor actriz de televisao pela AFI(Australian Film Institute), repetindo a dose em 1989 pela miniserie "Bangkok Hilton"(1989).
Nesse mesmo ano chegaria a fama ao protagonizar Dead Calm(1989), um thriller realizado por Philip Noyce e coprotagonizado por Sam Neill e Billy Zane, e que marcou a sua primeira incursao numa producao norte americana.
A sua primeira aparicao em producoes de Hollywood seria no filme de accao Days of Thunder(1990), realizado por Tony Scott e que a coloca pela primeira vez ao lado de Tom Cruise. Dupla que voltaria a aparecer em filmes como Far and Away(1992) de Ron Howard e Eyes Wide Shut(1999) de Stanley Kubrick.
Durante a primeira metatade dos anos 90 interviu em filmes como Billy Bathgate(1991), filme de Robert Benton pelo qual foi nomeada para o globo de ouro para melhor actriz secundaria, Malice(1993), um thriller de Harold Becker que Nicole coprotagonizou com Alec Baldwin, To Die For(1995), de Gus Van Sant que lhe valeu uma nova noemeacao para os globos de ouro, desta vez para melhor actriz principal, ou Batman Forever(1995), realizado por Joel Schumacher.
A partir da segunda metade e gracas a participacoes em titulos como The Portrait of a Lady(1996) de Jane Campion, Moulin Rouge!(2001) de Baz Luhrmann, pelo qual seria nomeada para o Oscar para melhor actriz principal que perdeu para Halle Berry, The Others(2001) de Alejandro Amenábar, The Hours(2002) de Stephen Daldry, onde foi novamente nomeada para o Oscar que desta vez nao deixou escapar, Dogville(2003) de Lars von Traer, ou Cold Mountain(2003), onde voltou a ser nomeadapara o Oscar, Nicole tornou-se numa das principais estrelas de Hollywood.
